ECU (Ely and Chesterton United) Female made the long travel to Uttigen (Switzerland) to play their second leg with the aim of overturning the narrow one goal deficit from the first game.
Tactics were amended from the first leg and the girls instantly started with total possession, seeing Uttigen quickly back into their familiar defensive pose.
However it was Uttigen's first attack down the left that saw a centre ball timed well in the middle and past Dottie for a 1st minute lead.
Although caught on the break, ECU never backed down, persistently taking the ball forward only to be met with a stubborn Uttigen defence.
Keeping the opposition almost exclusively in their own box it was a bizarre blue card given against ECU when Uttigen No.7 was adjudged to have been tripped in their own box having stepped on an ECU stick.
Rather undeservedly the resulting direct was placed under Dottie for a 2-0 lead.
ECU continued dominating and the high line virtually shut down Uttigen's familiar long range game whilst forcing possession to be overturned in their favour time and time again.
The pressure was rewarded in the 20th and 21st minutes when ECU’s captain Izzy struck with a quick close range shot and Gemma converted again from close range following some neat interplay with Sarah F.
2-2 at half time was nothing less that ECU deserved and the momentum was kept up early in the second half when the girls were awarded a direct following a cynical foul on Scarlett when she broke through the lines with a 2-0 situation certain to create a scoring opportunity.
Lily hit the target with the direct but the Uttigen keeper matched the effort and kept the score at 2-2.
Shortly after Uttigen’s umber five picked up the ball in the ECU half following a failed ECU interception and calmly slotted the ball past Sarah to restore their lead.
Although only limited chances were conceded by ECU, they couldn’t find the net again until Leah expertly converted a penalty with only 16 seconds to go.
Final score 3-3 and a 5-4 win for Uttigen over the two legs. A little less that our girls deserved, but an amazing tie showing courage and determination throughout.
