Ely City Reserves returned from their two-week break from action with a convincing win over Comberton, writes Chris Gibson.
Ely welcomed back Ben Harnwell after injury and Zak Slane came into the back four after a good game for the U18s side.
It was Luke Mansfield who went close in the opening five minutes, but saw his effort saved by the keeper. Conor Loker was lively early on, he linked up well with Mccallum whose effort was blocked away for a corner.
Ely's pressing game rattled Comberton and some good play saw Fin Logan in behind but his shot was lifted over the keeper and the bar.
Loker again was finding space and his work with Harry Woodbine saw Woodbine shoot inches wide.
Loker got his reward for his efforts on 27 minutes, as he collected the ball in space on the edge of the 18-yard box and slammed home.
On the half hour, Player of the Month for the Reserves, Joe Murfitt was called into action, as a cross shot was parried on the stretch and Slane cleared.
Murfitt then made another important stop minutes later as he went full stretch to deny the Comberton forward.
Up the other end, the Comberton keeper had to be carried off with a serious knee injury as he lost his footing making a save.
As half time drew, Ely doubled their lead after a free kick from Harnwell was spilled by the sub keeper and McCallum bundled it in for 2-0.
Injury time saw Slane have a first goal for the club chalked off for offside and then Ely put some distance on the scoreline, as the ball on the edge of the box wasn't cleared and Harnwell rifled into the net for a 3-0-half time scoreline.
The second-half saw Comberton start the better side and tested Murfutt with a well struck volley, but a big hand turned the ball over the bar.
Murfitt found himself busy again on the hour, a free-kick from Comberton was flicked into the path of the number 10 who as struck, saw Joe fling himself at the shot to smother the ball away.
The resulting corner, however, was flicked down and a ledged to have struck an Ely hand, the ref was quick to point to the spot and Comberton fired in despite the best effort from Murfitt for 3-1.
Ely pegged back more resistance from United, and then put the game to bed on 80 when substitute James Vouse with his first touch turned home fellow U18 sub Dylan Ashman's ball across the box.
Ashman then grabbed the fifth himself, cutting in from the left wing, across the 18-yard box and sending his drive the opposite way past a stationary defender and goalkeeper.
The game petered out into injury time and the reserves took the points with a commanding 5-1 win.
