Ely & Chesterton United Rink Hockey Club (ECU) is celebrating the success of its players at the recent Eurogirls 2024 tournament.
Six players formed part of the England under-17 squad which competed at Vordemwald, Switzerland between February 22-25.
The event saw teams from across Europe compete in a showcase of young talent, with England entering as European under-17 runners-up.
It follows the team's historic silver medal at the World Skate Organisation European Championship in Correggio, Italy, last summer.
The England squad, featuring ECU’s Sarah Moffet, Emily Bolt, Gemma Cannizzo, Izzy Jensen-Bhatti, Sarah Figredo, and Scarlett Courtenay-Barrow secured a remarkable second place finish.
The England squad is completed by Dottie Thorogood from Herne Bay RHC and Lily-Rose Chandler from Letchworth RHC, who also play for ECU in the Female Premier League, as well as Ruby Fraser from Skaters and Sophie Eaton from Peterborough RHC.
The team’s recent success cements England’s position among the top four European nations in rink hockey, alongside Spain, Portugal, and Italy, and highlights the significant contribution of ECU.
Fabrizio Cannizzo, Head Coach at ECU, said: “The club is incredibly proud of Sarah, Emily, Gemma, Izzy, Sarah, and Scarlett for their exceptional performances at Eurogirls 2024. Their dedication, hard work, and passion for rink hockey have been rightfully recognized on the European stage.
“This achievement reflects the strong development program at ECU, started six years ago, and our commitment to nurturing talent within the sport.
He added: “The club congratulates the entire England squad for their success and is looking forward to supporting our players in their future endeavours, both on the national and international stages.
“The club extends its heartfelt congratulations to the England under-17 squad and the coaching staff Karl Owen, Lucy Rowlinson and Sam Thorogood for their outstanding achievement at Eurogirls 2024, and thanks the Swiss Rink Hockey Federation for organising such a successful and memorable event.”
