Two schoolgirls who have been chosen to represent England for the first time hope to use this as a stepping stone towards establishing their international career hopes.
Millie Marriott of Sutton and Bryony Brodie of Ely were selected for the England Under 15 Schoolgirls squad following regional and national trials.
It is the first time that year nine pupils Millie, of Littleport and East Cambridgeshire Academy and Bryony, of Ely College have made it into the national team alongside 16 other players nationwide.
“Millie and Bryony have both been playing football since they could stand up,” Sean Marriott, Millie’s father, said.
“Both girls are excited and proud to represent their country and respective schools.”
After starting out at local grassroots level, defender Millie, 14 and midfielder Bryony, 13, progressed onto regional talent clubs and both play for Arsenal Under 14s.
The pair, who started playing together at under nines, were due to make their international debuts against an Independent Schools FA side recently.
“It’s a fantastic achievement for these players to have made it through a tough trials process,” Stuart Botham, chair of the English Schools’ Football Association, said.
“[This is] to be able to go on and represent their school, district, county and their country for this year’s international season.”
Millie and Bryony will be part of a training camp ahead of the Bob Docherty Cup this April, where England will face Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in Glasgow.
And after the week-long tournament, the duo could feature against Wales in May.
Sean added: “Both sets of parents are proud of the girls achievements; this is a stepping stone to opportunities within the full England squads.”
Millie, Bryony and their parents would like to thank Craig Hill Coaching and director Michael Ward of ProEdge Associates, Ely for sponsorship.
