A depleted Mildenhall Fen Tigers were taken a step too far in their rearranged National Development League play-off final.
Jason Edwards scored over half of the Fen Tigers’ points in a 62-28 play-off second leg defeat against Leicester Lion Cubs, raced at King’s Lynn, on November 4.
After losing 52-37 in the first leg a week before, Mildenhall needed to pull off a near miracle if they were to become league champions.
Five Mildenhall riders were out injured, but Edwards survived to notch five race wins and 17 points, something his teammates were unable to match.
Ashton Boughen, the only other Fen Tiger to win a race, prevailed in heat two but recorded just five points from his six outings due to machine problems.
Mildenhall’s James Laker and Bailey Fellows also added to the scoreboard.
But despite finishing runners-up in the league, the remaining two challenges of a knockout cup and play-off final proved steps too far.
