A free exhibition of oil portrait paintings is being held in Ely next week to celebrate a popular local artist's milestone birthday.
'Portrait from the Fens' will showcase works by John 'Harry' Thurley, who turns 80-years-old on Wednesday November 13.
The exhibition, which starts the next day (Thursday 14), is being held at The Old Fire Engine House on St Mary's Street and was curated by his daughters, Jane and Sarah, and granddaughter Amy.
Harry’s work is known for its use of light and colour that brings warmth and individuality to each figure.
He said: “I am incredibly proud to be exhibiting my work at The Old Fire Engine House. I hope the exhibition gives people a personal and reflective glimpse into my style of painting and shows my passion and dedication to capturing the spirit of my subjects”.

As a retrospective collection, each piece has been loaned from the personal collections of the portrait subjects to celebrate Harry’s birthday, and will be returned after the exhibition.
A private viewing will also be held on his birthday for family and friends to celebrate his special day.
The exhibition will run until Sunday, November 18 between the hours of 10.30am and 5.30pm.
The Old Fire Engine House has a strong tradition of showcasing the work of local artists and is proud to host this special exhibition.
It was built in the mid 18th century on the site of a farmhouse which was the home of Dean Tyndell's widow in 1616.
Ely's horse-drawn fire engine was kept at the site at the turn of the century.
Admission to the exhibition is free and everyone is invited to join in celebrating Harry’s life and work.
