Columnist Lyn Gibb-de Swarte reflects on a recent outing to 'Sunny Hunny'

Our ancient town of Littleport was unofficially represented last weekend at the purpose-built Victorian seaside resort of Hunstanton.

Since emerging in the 1840s from land fronting the Wash owned by philanthropic entrepreneur Strang, it’s been a go-to fun place for the people of Littleport.

And as the Hunstanton Promenade parkrun was celebrating its fifth birthday, Cathy and I joined in.

Me as a first time volunteer there and Cathy a ‘first-timer’ although parkrunning for the 164th time. Afterwards we treated ourselves.

Veteran vendors Fred and Pauline of Beach Promenade, who were by consensus Littleport’s favourite fish and chip van proprietors, are now selling ice cream and donuts from their new van that’s next to the old one under new management.

There were people at the parkrun we’d met at Littleport, and we bumped into some Littleport friends on the Prom too!

Littleport’s brass band entertains annually on the Hunstanton Bandstand and is hoping to confirm a date for next year.

And there’s always plenty of entertainment here at home in Littleport.

This Sunday, October 13, at 3pm at Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club Ponts Hill CB61PZ, the Littleport Band are giving a Memorial Concert for Joan Sharpe in aid of Addenbrookes.

After last week’s casino night that raised £720 for marathon runner Amy Bailey’s chosen Whizz Kidz charity, and a foot-stomping appearance Saturday by Highway Star, the Crown Inn 34 Main Street has Charlie Daniels and the Wranglers playing Country Saturday night October 12.

The new Plough and Harrow, at 61 Ely Road, is fast becoming a very popular venue with reasonably priced Sunday roasts getting rave reviews – and weekend musical events are attracting a good crowd.

Last week’s appearance by the Midnight Hoboes was a hit – and this Saturday, October 12, from 8pm patrons can perform themselves or just watch everyone else singing at the Karaoke presented by Jiffy Karaoke.

Littleport parkrun gathers at the Littleport Leisure Centre 8.45am for a 9am start this Saturday. Its 5k course over flat terrain is massively popular and always attracts parkrun tourists, including occasionally runners from Hunstanton.
