Eight villages in Cambridgeshire could get 20mph zones as soon as summer 2025.

At a Cambridgeshire County Council Highways Committee meeting on October 1, members heard that 66 applications for 20mph zones from across Cambridgeshire had been submitted to the council.

All of the applications were reviewed, and Cambridgeshire County Council has selected eight applications to progress with. They are in the following areas:

  • Waterbeach - village wide
  • Stow-cum-Quy - village wide
  • Elm - village wide
  • Bottisham - village wide
  • Little Paxton - village wide
  • Earith - majority of the village
  • Swavesey - majority of the village
  • Steeple Morden - central area of the village

£150,000 has been set aside by Cambridgeshire County Council for the next round of 20mph schemes to be implemented.

Either a 20mph limit, or a 20mph zone, will be introduced in the areas. A limit will cover a small number of streets and require signs only. A zone will cover larger areas and require both signs and marking.

Further consultation, both informal and statutory, will be carried out in the eight selected villages before any work commences on the 20mph areas.

Cllr Alex Beckett, Chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "It is good to see the applications coming in from across the county, the process is popular and oversubscribed, which is why we have the scoring criteria and why more funding has been allocated."

Councillors at the committee meeting were "interested" to see how popular the 20mph zone scheme has been across the county.

Some areas of Cambridgeshire have already had 20mph areas introduced, including in Ely and Ramsey, in Huntingdonshire.

Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, Cllr Anna Bailey, is currently awaiting a response from the County Council on her petition to reconsider the 20mph zones in Ely.
