Lucius Vellacott, Soham South councillor for East Cambs District Council, talks about plans for changes to bin collections this month.

Residents can expect a black wheelie bin to arrive from April 2026, collected fortnightly. Government also requires us to have a weekly separate food waste collection, with a bin and indoor caddy provided.

Over half of what goes into our black sacks could be recycled or placed in food waste, so we’re providing free additional recycling and garden bins too.

We still don’t charge for garden waste, still offer sacks for small properties, and a larger black bin if needed. We are optimistic that these small changes will massively help both residents and the environment.

In other news, the duck warning signs on the High Street and Paddock Street are just about to go up. Thank you so much to everyone who helped me push on this – we are helping wildlife and hopefully reducing speeding too.

I was very pleased to visit Sanctuary estates across the district recently, meeting people in Soham, Witcham and Sutton. I take a great interest in housing of all types in East Cambs, as a local young person as well as a local councillor.

But national planning reform is coming. At East Cambs, we are committed to infrastructure-led development with as much community involvement as possible.

I encourage everyone to vote in the Soham Neighbourhood Plan referendum on October 10, which is our opportunity to have a say on the town’s future development.

In Wicken, I am delighted to be supporting efforts to get a neighbourhood plan designed and implemented to help this gorgeous village thrive into the future. I continue to push the combined authority mayor to trial a bus route through the village too; we need to connect our villages with the world.
