An Ely drug dealer who ran from police has been jailed.

Officers were on patrol on May 18 when they spotted a black Kia they thought was acting suspicious.

Following a short pursuit, the driver, Naim Mehmetaj, stopped on Columbine Road but then ran towards Abbots Way, where he was arrested after a foot chase.

During the arrest, a sock, containing £230 in cash and 22 bags of cocaine, fell out of his pocket.

At Peterborough Crown Court on August 29, Mehmetaj, 29, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine.

Detective Constable Christian Jackman, who investigated, said: “Tackling drug dealing continues to be a priority across the force because of the associated violence, theft and misery it brings to our communities.

“Mehmetaj was so eager to get away from our officers that he left his vehicle running and failed to put the hand break on.

“Luckily, Ely officers kept pursuing him on foot and eventually detained him.”

“The car rolled into a nearby property and fortunately it didn’t cause any significant damage.”
