A renowned writer, broadcaster, former MP, 'Celebrity Gogglebox' star and 'This Morning' favourite will return to Ely next month.

Gyles Brandreth will be at St Mary's Church on Friday October 4 for a book talk hosted by local company Topping & Company Booksellers.

"Once again Ely Topping has the pleasure of hosting witty linguistic marvel Gyles Brandreth with his new book 'Prose & Cons'," say the event organisers.

"Prepare to sink into your seats in the comfort of his warm yet enthusiastic guide through the joys of English language.

His many books include the best-selling poetry anthology, 'Dancing by the Light of the Moon', and the international best-seller about spelling and punctuation, 'Have You Eaten Grandma?'

With Susie Dent, the lexicographer from 'Countdown', he co-hosts the award-winning podcast 'Something Rhymes With Purple'.

With Dame Sheila Hancock, he presents 'Great Canal Journeys' on Channel 4.

Alongside Dame Maureen Lipman, he is a regular on 'Celebrity Gogglebox' too.

Gyles is married to writer and publisher Michele Brown and has three children, seven grandchildren, and lives in London with his wife, his jumpers, and Nala, the neighbour's cat.

"When it comes to the English language, Gyles Brandreth has seen it all - and now he's ready to put you through your linguistic paces," added the Topping spokesperson.

"In this wildly entertaining A to Z of verbal acrobatics, Gyles takes you on a whirlwind tour of our mother tongue.

"From the origins of words and correct grammar and punctuation, to similes, euphemisms and record breaking tongue twisters (try getting your mouth around floccinaucinihilipification!).

"An idiosyncratic blend of history, word play, anecdote, and hyperbole, all in 60-second instalments, this is Gyles Brandreth at his word-perfect best. You'll never mix your metaphors again..."

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
