The theme for this year’s Ely Arts Festival was water and will showcase the city’s founding creature, the eel.

Artist Lizzie Ault has created a rainbow eel installation from embossed eels made by visitors to Ely Arts Festival Family Fun day in Jubilee Gardens in June.

Preparations are being made for the festival which takes place in December.

Chris Parsons, artistic director of the Ely Arts Festival said: "it has been fantastic to work with Lizzie on creating this brilliant installation.

"It is wonderful to celebrate the eel, such an important animal in Ely's history.

"We are really keen to utilise any space in Ely and I am very grateful to Cheffins and Ely Cathedral for allowing this to happen.

"Look out for more art popping up around Ely towards Christmas.

"We look forward to working with Lizzie again in our Winter Weekend where she will be delivering an embossed Christmas decorations workshop."

Eels have a historical connection with Ely; Ely means island of the Eels in old English. There is even a story that part of the cathedral was paid for in eels (though it may not be true) but Eels were once used as a kind of currency here because they were so plentiful and popular as a food.

Eels are wonderful and mysterious creatures with a fascinating life cycle.

They transform many times in their lives and make a great journey from the Sargasso Sea in the Caribbean (where they hatch) to Europe, and back again, when they spawn and die.

Sadly Eels are finding it more difficult to complete their life cycle in recent years and numbers have plummeted.

As so little is known about their breeding habits it has been difficult for humans to help the European Eel in its plight.

European Eels are now critically endangered.

Ely Arts Festival aims to provide a fun, creative and diverse programme of cultural events and activities in Ely and the surrounding villages.

Ely arts festival will return in December for a Winter Weekend so check out elyartsfestival.org for more details.
