The head coach at Ely Tennis Club battled through a 12-hour tennis marathon to raise £2,000 for a cause close to his heart.

Jack Pearson was inspired to take on the challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support following his stepfather's battle with cancer.

The coach's games began at 5am, with the final rally featuring club member Becky Lemkow, cheered on by ecstatic club members and supporters.

Over 30 participants, including Mr Pearson's mother, joined the fundraising rally in various ways.

Some played alongside Mr Pearson, while others paired up as competitors.

Other club members simply showed their support, offering encouragement and food and drink to the players.

Following the marathon, Mr Pearson said: “I want to thank everyone for their support and donations.

"It means so much to see so many members come together and get behind this event.

"What an amazing club."

He shared his personal connection to the cause, recalling the support that Macmillan provided when his stepfather battled cancer.

This event adds to a busy summer roster for ETC.

The club's diversity and inclusion team recently hosted a stall at Ely Pride, with a diversity open day scheduled at the Hive on August 11.

Parallelly, the Men’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams all clinched promotions in the Cambridgeshire Dunlop LTA Summer Leagues.

A club spokesperson said: "ETC prides itself on being a community-based, not-for-profit organisation.

"Established in 1989, the club champions accessibility and enjoyment for all in the vicinity of Ely, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

"As part of its weekly outreach, the club hosts walking tennis sessions at The Hive sports centre and reaches out to pupils at Highfield School."
