TV stars and comedians Jamali Maddix and Bobby Mair recently visited East Cambridgeshire - here, Lyn Gibb-de Swarte explains why and what happened.

The phone rang. “I’ve been at a friend’s wedding in Norfolk so would like to pop in on my way home – can I bring a couple of my friends with me?”

Well, Cathy and I have always welcomed our granddaughter’s friends right from her nursery school days, so of course we said yes.

They drew up outside, ready for tea and biscuits. As Cathy said as she served the tea, helped by Michelle, these are biscuits left over from the Ely Country junior parkrun we volunteered at this morning, and the trio all expressed their delight as they chose their selection from the same tin that previously had been at the finish of the kids 2k.

Michelle’s friends - comedians Jamali Maddix and Bobby Mair - told us they had heard a lot about her two grans and were interested to hear stories about her childhood excursions with us, also about her great grandfather de Swarte’s career in show business, and our own exploits as female sports journalists.

After much laughter it was time for them to leave, saying they hoped to come back to see us.

When they do, we will probably take them on a quick tour before going over the road as they noticed the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club bright lights opposite, and we told them we are members.

Michelle’s friends are always very nice and Jamali and Bobby were no exception!
