A unique exhibition of over 40 banners opened in Ely Cathedral’s Lady Chapel on August 1st, showcasing banners from across Cambridgeshire that were made for Mothers’ Union branches in the Diocese of Ely.
Other items of memorabilia are also on display marking special occasions or events, including kneelers, commemorative china, and books.
MU banners can be found in many parish churches and are often paraded at special services like Lady Day, Mary Sumner Day, and Commissioning Services.
Their history goes back decades and the banners feature a skilled quality and variety of needlework, usually done by local MU members.
On Friday August 9 there is a special service marking Mary Sumner Day at 11.30am in the Cathedral Presbytery, to celebrate the founder of the MU movement, Mary Sumner, who was the inspiration which led to the creation of a worldwide network of groups that would strengthen and support family life.
As a global Christian movement MU helps the world’s hardest-to-reach communities to transform their lives.
Their 4 million members are active in 84 countries, building a future where everyone can thrive. The exhibition runs until August 14 – and entry is FREE – included with Cathedral visitor ticket or pass (local residents/parishioners have free entry).
Please see the Cathedral website for details of entry requirements and any changes to opening hours or restrictions: www.elycathedral.org.
