A highly sought-after choir is looking to boost its ranks for upcoming concerts.

Ely Consort, the esteemed chamber choir, has completed an impressive season and is now focusing on recruiting new members to enrich its programme roster for the 2024-25 schedule.

Showcasing his immense talent and leadership, Matthew Rudd has successfully spearheaded the choir for two decades.

The choir of 40 performers rewarded music lovers in Chatteris, Long Melford in Suffolk, and at St Mary's Parish Church in Ely last season.

Rosemary Westwell, a reviewer for Ely Standard, praised the choir's exceptional performing standards.

She said: “The choir is phenomenal and has one of the highest standards in the district.

"The quality of their performance is amazing”.

The forthcoming season features a Christmas concert on December 7 in Chatteris, embracing traditional pieces such as Haydn’s St Nicholas Mass.

The following year, the marvellous Ely Cathedral's Lady Chapel and St Mary’s Parish Church will host Ely Consort's performances.

Ely Consort aims to engage a diverse ensemble by welcoming auditions from singers who can read music well.

Potential vacancies across all categories including soprano, alto, tenor, and bass push the choir's recruitment drive.

The auditions are to be held on September 5.

John Simmons, choir chairman, captures the choir's welcome to new members in his statement: “We’re keen to bring in some new recruits who enjoy faster-paced rehearsals and more challenging repertoire – there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Choir rehearsals take place every Thursdays from 8pm until 9.45pm, usually in the Recital Hall at King’s Ely School of Music.
