Staying safe online was the focus at a recent gathering where the Ely Computer Centre delivered an enlightening presentation.

The informative seminar was hosted by Scott Colling, the owner and managing director, who shared his digital security know-how at the East Cambridgeshire District Council offices on July 15.

Main points of discussion revolved around how to spot online scams via calls, emails, and texts.

Besides, Mr Colling shared tips on the best non-pricey software that guarantees stellar security.

Essential backup strategies and the predicted obsolescence of passwords within the next five years were also discussed.

Scott said: “Every day I get clients asking about online safety, I think it is incredibly important to help the local community to protect themselves against scammers and have the best online experience possible, especially as many services are disappearing from the high street.”

Senior Neighbourhood Watch member, Kevin Evans shared his experience: “Our members were instructed on various subjects including how to distinguish phishing emails and when to unsubscribe, also the importance of backing up and the fact that online storage such as OneDrive was very safe and secure.

"All this was made easy to absorb and understand as the information was presented in easily understood language without the difficult technical jargon so often associated with computing.”
