Mid-July has always been a time for summer festivities in Littleport, say columnist Lyn Gibb-de Swarte.

For instance, the huge Littleport Show founded in 1976 attracted world famous celebrities every year.

That was the case, until it had to stop in 2011, due to what a committee member back then, Derek Timbers, attributed to lack of volunteers and the rising costs of putting it on.

This Sunday (July 21) Derek, now entertainments manager for Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club, CB61PZ, presents the annual family fun day, from 3pm until 7ish.

Free entry, everyone is welcome and will enjoy music from Carl’s Intercity Disco and Saxy Al, with an ice cream vendor, cupcakes lady, more food, and many amusements like a bouncy castle and face-painting.

On Saturday (July 20) supporters of Highfield Littleport Academy, SOLHA, are hosting a summer fair on campus in Elmside, CB61LJ, from 11am-4pm.

Raising funds for much-needed accessible playground equipment, there will be music, inflatables, stalls of goodies, games, food and a raffle.

Free to enter and everyone is welcome.

And Saturday night the Crown Inn has tuneful singer Natalie Rose.

Sunday 3-6pm it’s Drew Girling of Max Headroom and Blue Thunder! The Ex-Servicemen’s Club and the Crown Inn have always had a friendly rivalry when it comes to sporting events.

Last Sunday, prior to the night of reckoning for England’s football team, there was a daytime clash between noon and 6pm for both of Littleport’s Titans in a major area pool competition.

In the top match, Littleport Ex Servicemen’s got beaten 7-5 by Witchford Sports and Social, although the ex-services Z took top of division three, and the Crown triumphed in tier two over March Conmen 7-4.

But, after that, the Crown and the Club were full of revved-up hopefuls watching the Euro Cup.

Half-time saw Leah Dews and Damian O’Connor focused on playing a recreational game of pool on one of the superb tables that had been used by the competitors earlier.

To chill out yourself, Sophie Taffara has a yoga session (£7) at Littleport Leisure, Camel Road, Friday morning (July 19) from 9.30-10.30am.
