Two Ely schoolboys are set to climb Scafell Pike in memory of their friend who recently passed away from cancer.
Adam and Elliot Brennand from the Lantern Community Primary School will scale the tallest mountain in England this weekend to raise money for Cancer Research after their friend Janet Rogers lost her battle with cancer in 2022.
During lockdown, Adam, 11, and Elliot, 8, both climbed a virtual Scafell Pike using a stepper in their living room, raising more than £600 for Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust.
Adam and Elliot's dad, Tom Brennand said: "We are incredibly proud of our boys. They have such kind hearts and are always wanting to help others.
"This is their way of not only remembering Janet, but also helping to get one step closer to a cancer free future for everyone."
Their mum, Jayne, added: "As a family, we have seen that there can be a positive outcome from improved cancer treatment, with both their Grandma and Grandad benefitting from successful treatment for 3 different cancers.
"This is why they were so keen to make Cancer Research UK their choice for this gruelling hike. It’s going to be a tough challenge for them, but we know they’ve got this."
A part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, Scafell Pike is the highest point for more than 90 miles, measuring 978 m (3,209 ft) high.
The deepest lake in England also lies at the foot of the mountain, measuring three miles long, more than half a mile wide and 258 feet deep.
