THE Ely Hero Winner 2023 attended the Buckingham Palace Garden Party on Wednesday May 22 at Buckingham Palace along with other guests invited by His Majesty King Charles III.
Wayne Bent and his wife, Pauline, attended the "once in a lifetime" afternoon tea experience at the palace for a day of royal bands, scones, tea and royal handshakes.
Wayne was the recipient of THE Ely Hero Award in 2023 due to his remarkable achievements to help the community of Ely and surrounding villages.
Wayne volunteered to assist CMSAR - Cambridge Search and Rescue many years ago and became heavily involved with the charity, recognising the importance of their work.

Wayne has now become a trainer for the organisation and is often the first point of contact if a person should be missing.
The role is varied due to terrains, emotional and very hard work. Wayne continues to drive forward and is fully committed to the role.
Wayne is also the manager of a local care home, Holly Cottage.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wayne and Pauline dedicated themselves to the continuation of care for the patients within the home putting their own lives on hold.
Wayne was invited to attend the annual Buckingham Palace Garden party through the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Mrs Julie Spence who is a huge supporter of Ely Hero Awards.
