Littleport loves its hedgehogs, as evidenced throughout the last few months of their hibernation and spring awakenings.
Many a poorly, injured or bewildered hedgehog has been rescued through prompt lively action via the Littleport Community Group Facebook page.
Now, Littleport Town Council has asked residents to share their thoughts on hedgehog safe-guarding measures to put before property developers before the end of May. Go to www.eastcambs.gov.uk/local-development-framework/supplementary-planning-documents.
Our nearest hedgehog hospital is run by Anita Nixon in Soham, whose Facebook group is Hedgehogs Corner.
She has a close association with our wonderful Littleport general vets Johnson and Scott Ltd at 61 Wisbech Road, whose care for our companion animals is legendary.
They also concern themselves with our wildlife, and only a couple of days ago treated as emergencies two hedgehogs for injuries before they went on to Anita’s and are now well recovered.
Heather’s Hedgehog Hostel is next nearest, 129 High Street Chatteris, 07827751083.
Littleport’s Town Council also cares about human beings. There’s a new play park being constructed near the Youth and Community Centre on Cornfield Lane.
In the recently-built centre, every Wednesday morning 9am-noon, there’s the 'community hub' for families, with free entry, refreshments and activities provided, signposting, laptop and WiFi available, with user support given too.
And if anyone wants to know what there is to do any day of the week, they can go to the interactive council site www.littleportwhatson.co.uk
All the usual recreational, fun and sociable events are taking place this weekend including the popular Littleport parkrun.
Then there’s the annual Crownfest and Bike Show at The Crown this Saturday (May 25) - bikes from midday, live music from 2pm – bike show winners, and from 9pm, The Numbers.
On Sunday The Crown and near neighbour Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club will be havens of tranquillity and the Swan, and Plough and Harrow, also have welcoming atmospheres.
