An internationally-celebrated pathologist has been awarded the 2024 Blaine award for her exceptional work in veterinary science.

Elizabeth ‘Butty’ Villiers works at DWR Veterinary Specialists, an animal hospital near Six Mile Bottom, Cambridgeshire, where she heads the diagnostics laboratory.

The accolade from the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) recognizes Butty’s notable contributions to the progression of small animal science in non-client-facing aspects like laboratory research, pathology, and epidemiology clinical laboratory work.

Her key forte lies in haematological malignancies and flow cytometry.

Her extensive experience in clinical pathology, coupled with expertise in internal medicine and oncology, made her an ideal recipient for this award.

She said: “My thanks also go to our team of clinical pathologists, anatomic pathologists, biomedical scientists, lab technicians and residents, who I have the pleasure of working alongside with at DWR Veterinary Specialists, as well as the Antech team.”

Aside from leading the team at the animal hospital, Ms Villiers is a co-author of the BSAVA Manual of Clinical Pathology.

She also shares her expertise by lecturing both nationally and internationally.
