A round-up of news from community groups in Soham compiled by Yvonne Long.
Soham Community group
On the morning of Monday, March 18, the Monday Club was well attended. On arrival, refreshments were served by the volunteers. Entertainment on this occasion was provided by one of volunteer Susan Taylor who gave a flower demonstration.
There were three separate displays and an Easter wreath and these were all sold with proceeds going to the club funds. Everyone gave Susan a round of applause.
Lunch was served and then visitors saw that Rose Free had made and donated knitted chicks and baskets filled with Easter eggs. These were sold, and proceeds were donated to the club funds.
The draw took place, with Claire White assisted by mum Jean giving out the prizes. Refreshments were again served which included a raspberry cake donated by a member. Games of bingo with Claire and Jean brought another enjoyable day to a close. Bingo prizes were donated by Andrew Fleet.
Community Care Coffee Morning
It was a disappointing attendance at the coffee morning on Tuesday, March 19 with only 14 people attending and joining David Tyne for refreshments and chat.
Maybe as the weather improves, attendance will be better. David organised the raffle during the morning. Everyone is welcome to these friendly get-togethers, from 9am to 11am every Tuesday in The Pavilion.
Comrades Club Bingo
It was eyes-down at 7.30pm for the the bingo players who get together in The Comrades Club every Tuesday evening. During the break for refreshments the raffle was drawn. New members always welcome. Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm start.
Over 60s Club
Members of the club met in The Pavilion for the Easter meeting on the afternoon of Friday, March 22.
Ruth Ginn welcomed everyone including Jacky Hibbard who was to judge the Easter bonnets made by the members.
After much deliberation, the winners were chosen with first prize going to Anita Brown, in second place was Ruth Ginn, third prize went to Judith Baker.
All entries received a prize. Ruth thanked Jacky for judging the bonnets. Secretary Yvonne Long announced that future club meetings will take place in the Guide and Scout Community Hall, starting from Friday, April 5 at 2pm.
The meeting continued with readings and stories from Ruth Ginn, Yvonne Long and Anita Brown who had also brought along items relating to Easter going back many years which she talked about.
There were readings and songs were sung from the song sheets. Ruth thanked everyone who had brought there bonnets and those taking part with the readings. Hot cross buns were served and Roger Holliday organised the raffle of the many prizes donated by the members.
The Easter meeting closed with the singing of the club hymn.
