A Littleport carpenter hopes to raise £5,000 for Cancer Research by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
Jamie Doswell, 44, will scale the world’s tallest freestanding mountain on June 10 following a successful fundraising campaign for the charity last year.
Taking his love for fundraising to new heights, Doswell raised £3,075 for a charity boxing match which he won in March last year and had planned to re-enter for 2024.
He said: “I signed myself up to the match because it’s a good way of getting fit and raising money for Cancer Research. After that I knew I wanted to do it again, but my mum and wife didn’t like to see their husband and son getting punched in the face.
“I had to think of another way to raise money, but as the top fundraiser from last year, I got invited to climb Mount Kilimanjaro as long as we could raise £4,000 by June.”
So far, Doswell has raised more than £3,300 via his JustGiving page and has even managed to secure the backing of local businesses as he continues to train for the nine-day ascension.
The climb is being organised by Ultra Adventures which arranges trips across the world for individuals wishing to raise money for Cancer Research.
Doswell believes the experience of reaching the pinnacle in Northeastern Tanzania in aid of vital cancer research is one he will never forget.
He said: “It’s going to be an incredible experience. I’m now part of a Facebook group and when we go through the kit lists and train, we’re all building up to the summit night.
“Everybody’s seen it on Comic Relief. When you watch celebrities climbing, you realise how massive an achievement it is to have scaled Kilimanjaro. It’s going to make every training session worthwhile.”
He added: “I’ve got family and even customers that have been impacted by cancer in some way. By doing my little bit, I like to think I’m helping in the fight against it.”
