A cycle ride which saw 15 girl guides travel 30km from Cambridge to Ely on Saturday (September 30) was ‘a great success’ with nearly £2,000 raised. 

Heather Maidens’ daughter and 14 other girls have been selected from Cambridgeshire East to represent their local area and country internationally at the Guiding World Centre in Sangam, India, next year. 

When there, the girls will participate in a leadership and community outreach programme to help people in the local area.

It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for them all, but they need to raise a lot of money to make the trip a reality, hence the girls taking on the cycling task. 

Heather said: “The girls’ bike ride was a great success; they all managed to complete it. 

“The weather was great for cycling. There was a bit of sun but it wasn’t too warm and there was no wind.”

After another hour of cycling, they arrived at Wicken Fen for a break where ice creams, hot chocolate and scones were enjoyed. This gave the girls the energy they needed for the last leg into Ely. 

They rode along the river into the city, through Jubilee Gardens before hitting the final hurdle of the hill into Cherry Hill Park. 

Heather added: “The view of the cathedral was much needed motivation to get them over the last stretch.

“We are all so proud of how well the girls did! A big thanks especially to Dave, Ella's godfather, and to Debbie, Guide Leader, for supporting the girls during the ride.” 

At the time of writing, the girls' fundraiser had reached just over £1,700.
