Lyn Gibb-de Swarte was at Littleport Brass Band's concert last weekend. Here's what she made of the performance.
Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club was alive with the sound of music on the afternoon of Sunday September 24.
The songs featured in the concert given by Littleport Brass Band celebrated 100 years of Disney film scores.
There wasn’t a seat left in the hall as the band began to play the overture medley conducted by Littleport’s own maestro Ian Johnson.
Many of those seats were taken by the children who had come along with their parents and grandparents and who were very obviously happy to be there.
Musical director Ian kept their attention, too, as he introduced each subsequent tune with amusing asides and insights.
This was equally enjoyed by the adults who constituted around 75 per cent of the appreciative audience.
When the band returned to the stage after the interval, they surprised everyone by entering through the main doors dressed as characters from the films.
At the back of the parade was the conductor who looked just like Johnny Depp' character in the Pirates' of the Caribbean film.
The musical accomplishment of this band is best epitomised by those of their number who performed pitch-perfect solos.
Musicians like Sean Broderick, Solo Euphonium, Jan W-Hall, Flugelhorn and Kim Heaver, Tenor Horn.
Dr James Stygall, on principal cornet and dressed as 'Mr Incredible', got a well-deserved mention at the end of the performance.
Littleport Band’s annual Christmas concert will be held at St George’s Parish Church on December 16. And, on December 9 at 2pm, its Christmas Carols at Ely Cathedral.
