The Caribbean came to Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club on September 16 and Lyn Gibb-de Swarte reviewed the event.
Even if they were never a skin-head or into the two-tone genre back in the 70’s and 80’s, present day fans of popular TV detective series Death in Paradise would have recognised many of the tunes belted out by the booked act, The Off Beats.
Judging by the dress and pork-pie hats, quite a few of the club regulars actually were fans.
The band's amazing line-up consists of Barbara Stretch (bass and backing vocals), Andy Rattle (lead guitar and backing vocals), Chris Taylor (keyboard and rhythm guitar), David Badcock (drums) and Lucy Baines (saxophone and lead vocals). Their sound technician was Jake Kibble.
The authentic sounds were much appreciated with every number getting applause as well as bodies jumpin’ and stomping on the dance floor.
Those of us who were part of the original audiences for ska performers like Toots and the Maytals, Stranger Cole, The Specials and Madness were not disappointed.
I’d wager those artists, including Doreen Shaffer and the Skatalites of You’re Wondering Now, would have approved Saturday night’s shindig.
