When Littleport (and NE Cambridgeshire) MP Steve Barclay opened the new Littleport Leisure Centre in summer 2018 it took some time for the convivial atmosphere of the old building to seep into its pristine bricks and mortar.
But over the last five years, and increasingly this year, with daily activities of all kinds, its ambience is regained, and visitors have been using the modern facility in their droves.
This summer, the hard-working management team is ensuring that ingress continues unabated.
History buff, MP Steve, was very interested when he spoke to me, in Littleport’s skating legacy and possibilities of an artificial full size ice pad for outdoor speed skating and bandy.
In more recent times, in summer, ice skates are exchanged for roller skates.
And all year round, Littleport Leisure holds busy fun roller skating sessions every Saturday morning for youngsters.
And Ely Roller Skating Club holds its serious training sessions there too.
Many club members have done very well in competitions, most recently Maddison Bourn was selected for the GB international team. Facebook: Littleport Leisure Centre or 01353 373800.
Littleport Bowls Club have been successful too, recently winning by three shots to go through to the next stage of the Stan Aldous competition. Members enter the Ladies Amy Rose County Game on Sunday May 28. (Info secretary@littleportbowlsclub.org.uk or www.littleportbowlsclub.co.uk)
This Whitsun weekend the churches celebrate Pentecost, and all the dine-ins, dine-outs, pubs and the Ex-Servicemen’s Club will be open for residents’ secular enjoyment.
And this Saturday, from noon to 11pm, The Crown Inn is holding a charity music festival with a great line-up of bands for East Anglian Air Ambulance. With mandatory festival burger van, it’s £5 wristband entry.
On a serious note, Littleport residents can attend the free Heartstart life support course, on Saturday from 9.30am to 12.30pm, at the village hall. Email emayouxandrews@gmail.com
