Cambridgeshire councils have emergency plans if the county faces any blackouts this winter, the authorities have said.
Councils provide vital services to people in the community and if the county did face any power cuts this winter, the authorities have said there are emergency plans in place to keep services running, and to support people.
Cambridgeshire County Council
A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said: “As part of our regular business continuity planning for the winter months, we have plans in place for a whole range of situations which might affect our services.
“These plans are regularly reviewed to consider potential risks such as flooding, bad weather and loss of power etc.”
The spokesperson added that information is regularly posted on the county council’s social media accounts reminding residents to be prepared for events that can have an impact on their lives, particularly during winter.
“We have started a winter ‘Be Prepared’ campaign working with our partners and reminding people of the need to be aware, be prepared and be healthy.”
Huntingdonshire District Council
Cllr Ben Pitt, the cabinet member for community and health at Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “Emergency planning helps us prepare and respond effectively to a wide range of scenarios, no matter how unlikely they may be.
“We regularly review our business continuity plans that deal with major incidents, emergencies, and other potential scenarios, including blackouts, that might impact our services and the wellbeing and safety of our residents.”
Cllr Pitt added: “If there is an emergency or major incident we will advise and support our residents communities and local businesses.
“We also regularly post information on our social media accounts reminding residents to be prepared for events that can have an impact on their lives, and, depending on the scenario, would look to directly engage with those who are most vulnerable.”
Fenland District Council
A spokesperson for Fenland District Council highlighted that the authority is a member of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Local resilience Forum.
They said the council had a “robust” emergency management plan which it said outlined how the district council would work with local partners and emergency services to major incidents.
The district council said its role is to support the emergency services in all areas of their work; maintain essential services; help return the community to a state of normality as soon as possible.
It said: “Whatever the incident, our role is to provide care and support the community and to get things back to normal as soon as possible.
“Our emergency planning officer is on call at all times to deal with an emergency. We also have staff who prepare the council for an emergency and can provide guidance to the public and businesses.”
We have also contacted East Cambridgeshire District Council to find out about its emergency blackout plans.
