Students at Soham Village College (SVC) are celebrating after winning the secondary school category at the Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz.

After qualifying in a virtual competition against several schools from across the country, the students travelled to the finals in London.

They listened to a talk by author Christopher Lloyd, and had to answer some tough questions based on what they had heard, as well as from their revision of the Britannica magazine and encyclopaedia.

After an ‘intense’ morning, the SVC team made it through to the play-off to determine first and second place in the secondary school category.

They won the final 11-6 and won £500 to be spent on non-fiction books.

Headteacher, Jon Hampson, said: “We are immensely proud of our students’ achievement.

“They worked very hard to prepare for the finals and we are delighted that they placed top of all secondary schools that participated in the competition.”

He added: “Their achievement is a real testament to all their dedication and preparation.

“This has been a great way for our students to engage with the wonders of non-fiction.”
