“Old” and “badly patched” buildings at Ely railway station have received a makeover thanks to funding from the Railway Heritage Trust.
Works, including removing old render from the buildings, went underway after it was discovered that steelwork had corroded, causing further problems.
The scheme to “improve the look of the station” was paid for by Greater Anglia and was helped by a £10,000 boost from the trust.
New stainless steel mesh has been installed by RG Carter which has been covered with lime render and specialist porous paint to extend its life.
Andy Savage, executive director of the Railway Heritage Trust, said: “The trust was delighted to be able to give a small grant towards this project.
“It improves the north end of the station, and also allows better facilities for passengers and others making use of it.”
Simone Bailey of Greater Anglia said: “This significant programme of work at the station means that passengers are now enjoying a smarter and more pleasant station.
“Greater Anglia is committed to upgrading stations across the network to make customers’ journeys better.”
