The Rotary Club of Ely is generally known for its good works in supporting local charities.

However, the club also supports international causes, such as the drive to eradicate polio and to provide shelter boxes used in emergency situations worldwide.

Recently, the club has just started a new project working in conjunction with Tools with a Mission, which is a UK-based charity with centres in Ipswich and Rugby, and collection points across the country.

The charity helps people in Africa living in extreme poverty to develop their own sustainable careers.

They send about 18 containers of refurbished tools to be used in skills training centres.

Currently they are working in Zambia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Tanzania and Malawi.

An additional advantage of this scheme is that it keeps 225 tonnes of tools out of landfills in the UK every year, thus contributing to the worldwide drive to improve our environment.

For more information and if you want to contribute, please visit the website www.twam.uk and then “donate tools” via the “give to us” tab.

This lists the items needed and by putting in your postcode you can see who your nearest collector is and then make contact.
